How Isle of Wight residents can get the car ferry for £53 (with a bit of effort and investment...)

Lymington to Yarmouth ferry
OK, first things first, this advice is only useful to people who have an Isle of Wight residence (which includes second homeowners).

If you are planning an Isle of Wight holiday and are looking for the best ferry price, check out our discount ferry page.

Anyway, I recently met up with an Isle of Wight schoolfriend in London, who was complaining over his steak avec frites that he had paid £150 for the Isle of Wight car ferry.

He nearly choked on his £7 Corona when I told him that he needn't be paying more than about £50 - £60 for a return crossing with a car if he did a bit of research and invested some cash (I figured he could afford an investment if he was willing to pay £7 for a small bottle of Corona).

So, here’s my two stage plan - I'm sure lots of Isle of Wight residents know about these deals already, but for those who don't:

1. Firstly, if you have an Isle of Wight residence and manage at least two return crossings in a year get yourself a Wightlink Multilink ticket. You’ll need to stump up £264 in advance (as of 2017) but that covers five return crossings over 12 months. You can generally travel at any time, even on a Saturday in August as long as you don’t leave it to the last minute.

Of course, you might not manage five return journeys in a year.

However, there are three bits of small print which make it worth considering:

a) you can put two names on a Multilink ticket and you don’t need to travel together – you just need to live together. So, for example you could put yourself and your spouse or child on the same ticket. You don’t even need to be the driver, you can be a passenger in the car.

b) your credit rolls over if you top up before the 12 months is over. So, if you travelled three times in one year and seven times in the next then it wouldn’t matter.

c) even if you don’t manage five return journeys between you and don’t top up your card, you can claim back 75% of the remain credit ("you can claim back 75% of any unused journeys, providing you request a refund no later than 30 days after the expiry of your Multilink Pass").

So, if you only managed three returns in a year between two of you, it would work out as about £61 per return crossing – still a very good price compared to the summertime peak prices. Even if you only travelled twice in a year it would be about £73 per return.

residents' ferry fares

2. Secondly, if you can afford it, get yourself a Red Funnel Travelcard. It will cost you £1000 as a one off which is credit which then sits in your account.

That’s obviously a big investment but it gives you 20% off car ferry bookings at any time and it never expires. With bank interest rates currently at rock bottom, you won't be losing much by having it sat as credit.

You can also book for family so you’ll find you get through the credit and you can potentially share a card between a few people.

You can also combine that with the Red Funnel loyalty card, which is free to join and basically works out as a discount of about 4% (UPDATE: it actually works out as 3.2%, sorry). It's not fiddly, you just earn points on one journey and spend them on the next.

So, combining those two deals will give you a discount of about 23.2% - almost a quarter (although you can't combine it with discount codes unfortunately).

You’ll find during the off-season or for day returns, Red Funnel will sometimes work out as cheaper than the £53 Multilink fare with your 23.2% off, so you can just plump for whichever is cheaper (or Red Funnel might be more convenient etc etc).

I admit that £1264 is a lot of money to stump up, but if you are able to pay it then you should never have to pay more than about £50 - £60 for getting to and from the mainland.

As you're the guru, I thought I'd ask if you've ever tried to use the Red Funnel discount day return voucher codes (you know the ones that get sent in the post) but just not travelled on the return crossing and booked another day return discount for the actual return and again not use the return journey? This means you could travel for £70 for a period return instead off £100+. Do you think Red Funnel would notice and subsequently hunt you down?
I hope that makes sense!

Hi Laura

I actually used to recommend that as a money saving loophole... until I realised Red Funnel don't allow it. I'm not sure what the punishment would be I'm afraid (5 years in parkhurst?) but it is certainly against their policy.

I've used the day returns like this a few times, no problem. Once I even had to change it at the last moment - did it on the 'phone, and person the other end did say "Oh, you used a sneaky day return, didn't you!" but she made the changes anyway.

Even with the savings that you suggest its still extremely expensive to cross the Solent compared to the tolls on other river/estuary crossings within the UK, typically around £6 return if there is a charge at all. An especially heavy burden for islanders with our low wage economy, it cost me £ 87 return the other day and that was "cheaper" because I booked may weeks in advance.

Hi, The Red Funnel travel card is not quite as good as you say. You have to have £1000 or more deposited with RF to get 20%. If you deposit £1000 and then book a return trip of say £100 then your balance is now £900 and you only get 10%. Similarly when your balance gets to £500 you get 6% discount.

If you own a home on the Island then you will get vouchers from Red Funnel giving up to 20% off. I am now using these and reducing the balance that Red funnel holds, at least until and if they stop issuing the 20% vouchers.

With regards Wightlink, their multilink scheme is mostly much more beneficial. But in their small print it says they only have so many spaces on each sailing so potentially a Saturday in August if not booked in advance may mean you cannot get on using the multi link ticket.

Hi Nick

Thanks for your reply, good to meet another bargain hunter!

Has the Red Funnel deal changed recently? When I topped up £1000 you got that 20% discount right up until you were at zero.

The Red Funnel website says:

"Discount levels are determined by the balance after you have topped-up your account"

And then

"The discount level will remain in place until the credit has been exhausted or the card is next topped-up."

So, it wouldn't matter if you dropped below £1000, as long as you didn't top up again. However if you got down to £100 and then added £500 then you would only get 10% off.

I may be wrong though, perhaps it has changed and I am getting the full 20% as an 'old' customer?

Very good point about the books of vouchers which seem to be quite regular now. And also worth noting that there are occasional fixed price offers or % discounts that beat the travel card (and you can't use travel card with other offers). There was once a 50% off deal on a black Friday or perhaps Christmas which still makes my heart beat faster when I think about it.

The advantage of the travel card is that it doesn't expire, so the only thing you are losing is bank account interest (assuming you have £1000 spare for starters)

You are right about Wightlink for sure. Perhaps I've been lucky but the only time I've not got the crossing I've wanted has been when I've left it very late during ultra peak season (e.g. festival or August saturday) but even then it's just been a question of going for a slightly different time than I wanted.

Keen to hear other people's experiences though!

I agree with Nick. As a new home owner on the Island I recently deposited £1000 with Red Funnel and noticed I only got 20% off on my first trip. I will not be topping up again and now use the 20% vouchers delivered to my house to get discount and pay with my travel card to use up my balance.

When my balance is zero, I will be using Wightlink as my first preference. My cheapest Red Funnel crossing so far with discount was £54.00, most are £80+ So c£53 on Wightlink will work out cheaper with more certainty of the price.

Something else I noticed (Red Funnel) was if I entered a dummy booking without logging into my account, then logged in entered the same dummy booking, added the 20% voucher code, the price to pay was higher then the “anonymous” price less 20%. In other words the “dynamic pricing” model used by Red Funnel jacks the base price up when it knows you have login have a travelcard or use a voucher.

I tried this using different devices and different internet connections simultaneously and got the same result.

Thanks Garry, this will require further investigation!

What did the discount drop to once your balance dropped below £1000? Was it 10%?

You wouldn't have got the discount if you were using a voucher, as the Travelcard discount doesn't apply if you've got a voucher.

Just checked my Travelcard and it says my current balance is £450 and my current discount level is 'Level 3: 20% off'.

Weird, I just checked mine, £868 balance, discount level 2 = 10%. Perhaps they look after you Guru? Or maybe its changed since you last topped up?

Garry, that's not correct. If you deoosit 1000 you get 20% off for all of the credit.
What you should never do is top up with a lower amount in between. First of all, it resets the discount to the new balance. Secondly, there is no benefit to putting more than you need to. I top mine up when it's near zero!
Correction to Guru, the 4% points bonus is what you spend, so it's equivalent to 3.2% after the 20% discount i.e. a total of 23.2%, however you do also get up to 20% off on board drinks and food without having to use your card balance.

Dave and Guru, I just went to book a return using my travel card balance (currently £792). I could only get 10% online. I phoned Red Funnel and they said the reason is because my balance is under £1000. I was assured that people do not get 20% unless they have £1000 or more at the point of booking. I suggested they look at this thread and perhaps even contribute an official comment. I have asked for £500 to be refunded to me as I have now bought the Wightlink multilink pass (guarantee of c£27 each way) and will use Red Funnel if I have to and if they have some decent offers via the voucher books.

Hi Garry

Well, that has me stumped. The Red Funnel guidance seems quite clear on this page: https://www.redfunnel.co.uk/en/isle-of-wight-ferry/fares/private-vehicle-fares/travel-cards/ (that's the page I was referencing earlier).

Perhaps point them to this link as that says that

Discount levels are determined by the balance after you have topped-up your account"

And then

"The discount level will remain in place until the credit has been exhausted or the card is next topped-up."

I think your plan of action is a good one though - Using multilink when it's cheapest and Red Funnel when the voucher booklets come through (which seems to be more regular than when I first bought a Travel Card)

Cheapest return is to use Tesco vouchers. £1 of Tesco vouchers is trebled to £3 worth of ferry travel on Wightlink. I have twice got day returns (booked late and for the times I wanted) for £25 worth of Tesco vouchers. Great value!

Thanks Rachel, yes we like that deal a lot. It tends to work best during the winter and other off peak times if you're an Island resident with a Multilink pass. For example, you might get a Wightlink return crossing for £75 in winter, which would only be £25 of vouchers so much cheaper than the Multilink price (about £55 return). In summer, the crossing might be £150 return, which would be £50 in vouchers so very similar to the Multilink price.

Myself and partner own house on Isle of Wight, I live in said house, my partner lives in Milton Keynes, so most bills on the island are in my name, would the land registry doc do for proof for my partner, can’t get any joy from Wightlink!
Thanks

Hi Kim
The application form says "We accept driving licences, most recent utility bills, phone bills, council tax bills or bank statements only" so I would guess they wouldn't accept land registry docs. The other thing to consider is that you only need to go through the application process when you first apply. As long as you top up your account online each year it will stay active.

Kim

Use your council tax bill as proof of residency and take it to the Wightlink booking office. You can have your name and your partners on the Multilink pass. That means either of you can book and travel to/from the Island using the pass. Booking earlier than later is a good idea as they only have a certain number of pass spaces per crossing.

I have been researching the best way to get my family over and came up with a plan. I cant understand why this hasn't been considered unless of course by publishing this I'm about to get blacklisted!
If I have a wightlink multilink pass but travel over to the mainland as a foot passenger (£10-15?) Then meet my daughter and return with her in her car using my pass wouldnt this work out a lot cheaper in the higher season or would I just be saving pennys and not pounds?
