Isle of Wight festival history - 1968 to today

After much typing, we are pleased to present every Isle of Wight festival, lineup and ticket price since 1968!

If you want some more detailed reminiscence, check out our top 10 unforgettable moments from 50 years of the Isle of Wight Festival featuring such highlights at David Bowie's last UK gig in 2004, Bob Dylan's emergence from exile in 1969, the colossal crowd of 1970, Kanye West joining Jay-Z onstage in 2010 and er, Morrissey cancelling in 2005.

Adult ticket prices: £289.95 including booking fees. Early bird ticket prices for Islanders were £176.35.

Attendance: An official press release said there were 'over 55,000 people'. Olly Murs announced from the stage that it was 53,000, although we haven't seen that elsewhere. Perhaps he has a part-time job at Ticketmaster? It didn't sell out - as far as we know - but it must have been close.

Notable for: Jess Glynne returning to the main stage, six years after she was given a lifetime ban. Jessica Biel watching her husband Justin Timberlake from the side of the stage. We saw Sting on the ferry, but that's mostly of interest to me! First year of big new sponsorship deal with Sky. There was also an amusing moment where two Foo Fighters tribute acts were competing with each other by playing on different stages at the same time.

Attendance: more than 55,000 according to an official press release. It didn't sell out, but it wasn't far off.

Notable for: an inflatable Dookie aeroplane and ring of fire for Green Day's set. Tragically, there was also a 'sudden death' of a woman in her 40s at the festival campsite. It was not treated as suspicious by police.

Isle of WIght Festival 2020 (Cancelled)

This was the festival that never was, but we thought we'd include this one on our list for the benefit of anyone compiling a pub quiz in 2032 about events which didn't happen due to Covid-19.

Attendance: er, zero. I did see one guy wandering around Seaclose Park that weekend but I don't think that counts.

Notable for: as mentioned earlier, the cancellation of the Isle of Wight Festival 2020 due to the Covid-19 Pandemic. Ticketholders were told they could have a refund or carry over their ticket to the next year.

Isle of Wight Festival 1990

Artists in the line-up: Audience, Pete Brown Group, Volker Cat, Clear Blue Sky, Julie Felix, John Fielder, Groundhogs, John Richardson, Dick Taylor and Friends, Third Eat Band. Some Facebook chit-chat also says that Boy George and Captain Sensible performed but they aren't on the poster that I've seen.

Approx attendance: unknown, but we assume it was less than 5000 as there was an act of parliament in place banning larger gatherings on the Isle of Wight.

Notable for: This one-day festival was sold as a 20th celebration of the 1970 Festival and took place on the Monday of the bank holiday weekend in late August. The venue was Smallbrook Stadium in Ryde and it ran from 11am to 11pm. We don't know a great deal about it but there are posters describing it as the 'Isle of Wight Festival of Music' so we think it's worth including.

Approx attendance: estimates vary but some say 600,000 to 700,000 - others say it was more like 200,000 to 300,000.

Notable for: Many things! Last festival before the introduction of an Act which stopped future large gatherings. First and last held in Afton Down. Jimi Hendrix's last UK performance.

Available to watch: You can buy sets from Jethro Tull, Jimi Hendrix, Joni Mitchell, Moody Blues, Taste, Leonard Cohen, The Who and The Doors. Isle of Wight Festival 1968

Headliners: Jefferson Airplane

Most of the names on this page were gathered using official sources, such as posters advertising the festivals. However, some of the lesser-known bands came from less official sources such as (ahem) Wikipedia. If you reckon that we've made a mistake and that Joe Flipstick and the Diddlewotsits actually played at the 2006 festival, please get in touch.

Video links are posted under the terms of Youtube's usage - however, if you believe that the original poster has breached copyright and own a video, please contact us and we will remove it.
