Puns and sunshine at Bembridge Windmill

It doesn't take much to entertain a toddler sometimes. It's tempting to plan exciting days out but you can be fairly sure they will say later that their favourite part was the pack of fruity wriggles they had in the car in the way home, or the fact that they were allowed to wear their new socks.

And so it proved at Bembridge Windmill, which I fully expected to be an absolute bore to our three year old. However, we are middle class enough to be National Trust members and we were passing so we decided it was time to have a look around after many many trips past the Windmill.

Thankfully, the National Trust is on the ball with such things and had hidden half a dozen Miller figurines around the windmill for us to spot. The little one didn't understand the Mill-I-Am gag but I appreciated the effort. No sign of Milli Vanilli unfortunately, but you can't have it all.

It was a little precarious at times with a toddler who can just about climb the stairs having to clamber up 300 year old ladders and wander around bumpy floors, but we managed it without injury and enjoyed the views and creaking old artifacts from the various floors.

The Windmill is not huge and you'd be hard pressed to spend much more than an hour there unless you sit down and slurp tea all afternoon. But if you're a National Trust member or you don't mind paying the modest entry fee to support a charity (five pounds something) then it's well worth a visit if you're in the area.

Needless to say, the little one's Wow Moment of the day was finding the final plastic figurine in the windmill.
