The job of maintaining the Needles Lighthouse has been going on this week and some terrific photos have been appearing on Facebook. I rather wish that my careers advisor had suggested that I might like to repair lighthouses. Instead, I was offered a week stacking the shelves at M&S in Newport. I contacted Nick Chappell, who is on the lighthouse at the moment, who kindly said I could share his images. For an Isle of Wightophile (Ed: that's not a word), these are pure gold.  The lighthouse opened in 1859 and stands at 31m tall  A sunny day from the helipad  A somewhat stormier day this week!  Several carvings can be seen in the rocks next to the lighthouse  A bedroom with a view  The lighthouse has been automated since 1994  The bunk beds inside the lighthouse are not available on Airbnb unfortunately  The narrow stairs at The Needles (and Nick's feet)  Still waiting for an Evri delivery at the Needles  A photo from earlier in the year of water being dropped off for workers at the Needles You might also like to see our video of the Needles, which was taken last month. This is the 1st time I've ever seen pictures taken from the lighthouse itself. It's been fascinating seeing the views.

Thank you for sharing Isle of Wight Guru. Nick Chappell and the team working on the lighthouse have given us all such a fantastic opportunity to see the Needles Lighthouse at close quarters. The Facebook posts are so entertaining and the photographs have given us an insight to a fabulous structure so many take for granted.

Hi there. Someone asked me if I’d seen the mermaid statue when we swam to the lighthouse. Is there one there please? Also what powers the lighthouse for the warning light, heat, lights, cooking etc?

I'm not aware of a mermaid statue at The Needles. There is one in Cowes, which was modelled on Sharron Davies.

It's been fascinating looking at these pictures. Since Nick Chappell started putting the messages and pictures on the Isle Of Wight site. It had cause a lot of interest in the Lighthouse itself. Never had it been seen before! Plus it was the comments that gave everyone a smile. It certainly brought the site alive each day. Your comment will be posted after it is approved.
