We've had an exclusive 20% discount code with Hovertravel on our Discount Isle of Wight Ferry Travel Guide for a while now. However, it is buried away a little amongst the other deals for Wightlink and Red Funnel.

It also seems a good time to mention it as you may be planning an Isle of Wight day trip from Portsmouth. After all, the nights are getting longer, snowdrops are sprouting in churchyards and lambs are frolicking in the fields (Ed: don't get carried away).

Newcomers to Isle of Wight travel might like to know a few things about the hovercraft.

• The hovercraft travels from Southsea to Ryde Esplanade. If you are getting a train to Portsmouth Harbour then you'll need to walk 1.2 miles or catch a bus which costs about £4 return for an adult.
• You can't take your car on the hovercraft. The hovercraft can carryfour bicycles at a time, which travel for free with an owner. You can't book a bicycle, so it's first come first served. Alternatively, you could gather up the other cyclists and arrange a sprint along Southsea seafront to decide who gets to take their bike onboard.
• It takes about 10 minutes to get to the Isle of Wight on the hovercraft. That's the quickest of all six ferries which travel to the Isle of Wight. You may like to refer to it as "two Peppa Pig episodes" if you are travelling with a young child who doesn't understand time.
• Technically, the hovercraft is a flight rather than a ferry crossing as it flies slightly above the water. Please do not ask for directions to the duty-free lounge or passport control. It's not big, it's not clever and they don't like it. You're a grown man in your late 30s, stop behaving like a child.
• Once you reach the Isle of Wight, the world is your oyster (to an extent). You can jump on theIsle of Wight's only modern trainline to head towards Shanklin or get onto an open top bus which does a circle of popular spots.
