By my count there have been 27 Isle of Wight Festivals. There were three between 1968 and 1970 before it moved to Seaclose Park, before the current run which has stretched from 2002 to 2026, with 2020 the only interruption. There was also a one day event in 1990, which was billed at the Isle of Wight Festival and was a 20 year anniversary celebration of the 1970 event. You can see every lineup in our history of the Isle of Wight. But which has had the best trio of Main Stage headliners? Before we get onto the meat of this debate, I'll admit that it's a flawed question for a number of reasons:
So, which year had the best trio of headliners? To attempt some kind of comparison, I'm just going to look at Isle of Wight Festivals that have been held over three days. Strong contenders in my opinion are:
If you also include two day festivals then you would have to include 1969 (Bob Dylan and The Who). For what it's worth, my personal opinion is that 1970 and 2010 both stand up as having an exceptionally strong trio of headliners. Other opinions are welcome. You can read the full list of line-ups from various years in our history of the Isle of Wight Festival. How about some contentious data to cause an argument? For my own interest, I'm going to see how the line-ups compare on Spotify monthly listeners. This is a deeply flawed comparison as:
It does have some value though, as it shows us which artists have sustained popularity and which were briefly popular enough to headline a festival and have subsequently faded away. Anyway, here are the results. Isle of Wight Festival Three-Day Headliners By Spotify Monthly Listeners
So, the ranking for the best trio of headliners based on current popularity on Spotify looks like this:
So was 2026 the best ever trio of headliners?I will pre-empt the comments section below by pointing out that the league table based on Spotify listeners is skewed towards more recent festivals, whilst my personal league table is skewed towards older festivals.
I am probably guilty of nostalgia and seeing lineups in hindsight. On the other hand, it's not staggering to consider that artists that are currently on tour and which are currently popular will score better than those from 50+ years ago. As mentioned earlier, we didn't include the years with Bowie and Dylan because they weren't three day festivals. There are multiple other flaws mentioned above. I will pop a note in the diary for 10 years time to see if the acts that headlined in the last couple of years have managed to sustain their popularity. Feel free to comment below with your top three line-ups.
