Which Isle of Wight Festival Had The Best Trio of Headliners?

24/6/2026

Stereophonics at Isle of Wight Festival 2025
Was 2025 one of the best lineups ever at the Isle of Wight Festival?
By my count there have been 27 Isle of Wight Festivals. There were three between 1968 and 1970 before it moved to Seaclose Park, before the current run which has stretched from 2002 to 2026, with 2020 the only interruption.

There was also a one day event in 1990, which was billed at the Isle of Wight Festival and was a 20 year anniversary celebration of the 1970 event. You can see every lineup in our history of the Isle of Wight.

But which has had the best trio of Main Stage headliners?

Before we get onto the meat of this debate, I'll admit that it's a flawed question for a number of reasons:
  • festival line-ups tend to look better in hindsight as bands gain in popularity. I regularly fall down the rabbit hole of looking at Reading/Leeds and Glastonbury lineups from the early 2000s and think they were stunningly good ("Foo Fighters fifth on the bill!"). When I attended festivals at that time, I don't remember feeling quite so blown away. The same is probably true of the Isle of Wight Festival.

  • a festival such as the Isle of Wight Festival is about much more than headliners. I get beyond irked by Facebook comments along the lines of "Lewis Capaldi was terrible, so I went home!". There are literally 14 other stages within a short walk. The point is to explore and discover stuff rather than sitting in one place and complaining when you aren't entertained.

  • it's hard to compare line-ups without a proper understanding of a band's popularity at the time. The coup of getting Bob Dylan to appear at the Isle of Wight Festival in 1969, for example, was really quite something at the time. It would still be a big deal today, but not quite in the same way.

  • some Isle of Wight festivals haven't been held over three days. The Isle of Wight Festival in 1968 was over two days. The Isle of Wight Festival 1969 had two main days, with a third day, which was a free concert. The Isle of Wight Festival 2002 was actually a two week festival with a one day Rock Island festival as the main event. On other nights, it was a couple playing folk songs in a pub in Carisbrooke. The Isle of Wight Festival 2003 was a two day festival. Since 2008, the Isle of Wight Festival has really been a four day festival with a night in the Big Top that has included some pretty big acts including Primal Scream, Razorlight and Boy George.

  • some people look at the Isle of Wight Festival 1970 as such a sacred event that they would consider comparisons as being like comparing apples with oranges (the 1970 festival is sometimes called 'The Last Great Event'). My opinion is that it's a bit more complicated, but that's a debate for another blog post. For what it's worth, I prefer oranges at home as they have a nicer smell but I prefer apples out and about because they are more practical for a picnic setting.

So, which year had the best trio of headliners?

To attempt some kind of comparison, I'm just going to look at Isle of Wight Festivals that have been held over three days.

Strong contenders in my opinion are:
  • Chicago, The Doors, Jimi Hendrix (1970)
  • Stereophonics, The Who, David Bowie (2004).
  • Prodigy, Foo Fighters, Coldplay (2006)
  • Snow Patrol, Muse, The Rolling Stones (2007)
  • Jay-Z, The Strokes, Paul McCartney (2010)
  • Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Pearl Jam, Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band (2012)

If you also include two day festivals then you would have to include 1969 (Bob Dylan and The Who).

For what it's worth, my personal opinion is that 1970 and 2010 both stand up as having an exceptionally strong trio of headliners. Other opinions are welcome.

You can read the full list of line-ups from various years in our history of the Isle of Wight Festival.

How about some contentious data to cause an argument?

Pet Shop Boys at Isle of Wight Festival 2024
How do the 2024 headliners compare according to Spotify users?
For my own interest, I'm going to see how the line-ups compare on Spotify monthly listeners.

This is a deeply flawed comparison as:
  • it doesn't take into account an artist's popularity at the time of the festival. Older artists are probably more likely to have lower numbers than newer artists
  • artists with one or two massive songs tend to have very high numbers, as you only need to listen to one track to add to the number. The Beatles are way down the list of the most popular artists, but I would guess that the number of hours that people listen is very high compared to Chesney Hawkes or Deep Blue Something.
  • it's not always clear who the headliner is. Is it the last band on or the band at the top of the billing? The Isle of Wight Festival often puts a dance act on after the official 'headliner'. For example, In 2014, Calvin Harris was last on the bill but Biffy Clyro were top on the poster. It makes a big difference to the numbers which one you pick, as dance artists often have huge numbers (thanks to collaborations I'm guessing). The 2015 poster didn't make it clear whether Black Keys or Prodigy had top billing, but The Prodigy closed the evening.
  • popularity is rarely aligned with quality, in my opinion!
  • several big acts have appeared as solo artists, but have played songs from their more successful bands. We counted people as solo artists - such as Liam and Noel Gallagher, Paul McCartney or Sting. The numbers would  be higher for The Beatles, Oasis or The Police. When it was Queen and Adam Lambert, we went for the Queen number.

It does have some value though, as it shows us which artists have sustained popularity and which were briefly popular enough to headline a festival and have subsequently faded away.

Anyway, here are the results.

The Isle of Wight Festival 2026 came top based on Spotify numbers

So was 2026 the best ever trio of headliners?

I will pre-empt the comments section below by pointing out that the league table based on Spotify listeners is skewed towards more recent festivals, whilst my personal league table is skewed towards older festivals.

I am probably guilty of nostalgia and seeing lineups in hindsight. On the other hand, it's not staggering to consider that artists that are currently on tour and which are currently popular will score better than those from 50+ years ago.

As mentioned earlier, we didn't include the years with Bowie and Dylan because they weren't three day festivals. There are multiple other flaws mentioned above.

I will pop a note in the diary for 10 years time to see if the acts that headlined in the last couple of years have managed to sustain their popularity.

Feel free to comment below with your top three line-ups.
